Since we, the residents of Washington, D.C., lack voting
representation in Congress, we need you, who do have representation, to
adopt D.C.! We are launching a new advocacy effort to recruit 50,000 votes from
across the country in support of affordable housing in D.C. When issues arise
concerning federal agencies and HUD-related housing, we need votes in Congress
to influence budget decisions and HUD actions and policy. We need you to sign up
for our network and register your support with your Congresspeople on an
as-needed basis.
We are working with several federally subsidized apartment houses where
low-income people live and are threatened with displacement and loss of rights
due to misguided HUD policies. Whenever this happens we need you to adopt us and
get your Senator or Representative to put pressure on HUD or other federal
agencies to change direction. With strong Congressional influence, D.C.’s
working families can continue live in their homes and stabilize their
neighborhoods.
One success story of Congressional influence over HUD comes from New York.
HUD had to decide what to do with apartment houses where HUD held the mortgage
but that were being poorly maintained by private owners. Because local New York
activists and organizers won the support of Senator Schumer and Rep. Rangel,
they got HUD to foreclose on the negligent owners and to sell the properties in
special auctions with preference given to non-profits and the city's housing
authority. This ensured the homes remained in the HUD Section 8 program.
The nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C., has no Senators or voting
Representatives. So we need you! By joining the Adopt DC network, you
will receive occasional, easy-to-respond-to alerts, which sometimes will relate
to issues affecting housing nationwide and other times will deal with a specific
issue relating to D.C. Even taking action on the DC-specific issues could affect
your state by helping to guide HUD and Congress toward making better decisions
across the country.
Please sign up to Adopt DC and cast your vote for affordable housing!
